What is the most useful gift to buy a new baby?

My son and daughter have blessed us with the announcement that we will be grandparents come from January (oh I'm soooooo excited) could fine parents out there give me some tips for shopping, what kind of things will be most useful and is there something that could not have come without (Apart from his family) Thank you, I have pen and paper handy.
