When starting to talk about Heidelberg Germany, a question appears inevitably: how to arrange the order of its dignities and features. The history is so long that takes its beginning in archeology and paleontology. What is more important in it? These were suburbs of Heidelberg where in 1907 Otto Schoetensack discovered remains of a human who lived here 500 thousands years ago in Germany. He was called Homo heidelbergensis. Anthropologists believe he is a relative of Pithecanthropus.

Maybe we should place emphasis on the history of the city and its impressive castle? The castle, which sometimes seems to be a backdrop for a knight movie, but nevertheless it is real. The castle is full of stories in the best tradition of novels of Walter Scott and Henryk Sienkiewicz. The name “Heidelberg” comes from the German Heydelbeerenberg – “blueberry mountain”. It was first mentioned in records of the monastery at Schönau in 1196. But, according to archeology data some districts of the city in Germany were inhabited much earlier, in the VI-VIII centuries.

There are a lot of castles in Germany but Heidelberg first of all is associated with the university. This is the oldest university in Germany. Heidelberg University was opened in 1386 and had typical for that time faculties: theological, philosophical, medical and legal. Some people state that the famous student anthem “Gaudeamus” appeared exactly in Heidelberg. The university kept the largest collection of manuscripts in Europe till the XVII century. But then it was transferred to the Vatican.
