Christmas Gift Alternatives

christmas gift alternatives
With all the recent recalls on toys, how is Christmas going to be this year?

Do you suppose it will be the “Christmas to end all Christmasses” as far as sales for toy companies? [or insert other gifting holiday/birthday] You know, safe new toys to replace all the ones that were dangerous and had to be taken away?

Or is it more likely that this holiday season/next birthday will have folks stay away from toy-toys and do stuff like homemade toys, clothing, books, or other “toy” alternatives?

Just wondering what the rest of the country thinks the gift-trading will be like for the younger ones.

I work in retail and people are still buying toys like crazy. Not me…if it’s made in China, I’m not buying it. I already told my and my husband’s family the same thing. I’m buying mostly snacks, juice boxes, books, and clothes. My daughter loves books anyway and would rather sit on a mountain of them and play than play with toys anyway.

Wedding Registry Ideas for Blended Families

The creation of a blended family through marriage can be a joyous – and logistically challenging – occasion. Using a wish registry (a tasteful, convenient version of a cash registry) is a fantastic way to simplify and celebrate the union of two people who already have children.
For young brides and grooms with no children, household essentials may be welcome wedding gifts. But as a couple who has been married before, you’ve probably got more  important goals than beefing up your silverware collection or receiving yet another soup ladle. Instead of an unimaginative wishing well, consider inviting guests to contribute monetary gifts towards an online wish registry.
Below are a few ideas for what to tastefully request:

  • Contributions to a college fund, or several college funds. If your children or stepchildren will be heading off to college in the next couple of years, they’ll need money for tuition, books, and living expenses. Guests can show their support for the newly expanded family by kicking in a donation for this worthwhile cause on your gift registry.
  • Additions or repairs to the house. Remember the Brady’s? Nine people in one house, two of whom are already teenagers and two of whom will soon be teenagers. Jan will likely want her own room soon. Plus, with all those boys in one house, you just know things are going to get broken, like a vase… or Marcia’s nose. With a wedding wish registry, you can ask for help completing certain projects, such as a new addition, upgraded appliances, or an extra bathroom. You can even ask for help covering moving expenses to ensure that everyone’s belongings get safely settled.
  • Family vacations or nights out. Raising children in a family that has suddenly doubled in size can be just as challenging as it is joyous. You don’t need more stuff—you need time together, even if it’s only for a weekend away or a night out. Use the wish-based bridal registry to help buy a nice dinner out for just the two of you, or for a concert and hotel room. After all, even the most perfect family needs a break once in a while.

Birthday Gift Decoration

Sophistocated birthday party ideas (food and drinks and decoration)?

She just wants a small party at her place, with pre-drinks and party food and then going out to a club afterwards.

I have already got her a small cake decorated like a birthday present with her name on it as a birthday gift. I just need ideas for food and drinks and maybe a couple of tasteful decorations for the party…

Decorations: Pick a color scheme – gold, silver, bronze, black and white. (My favorite is to combine gold and silver or gold and red.) Shoot for one that you know she likes (and that won’t clash with the room colors), then pick your decorations. (Keep in mind the accessories you already have, such as candle holders and table cloths, cocktail napkins, etc., so you limit buying these bigger ticket items if budget is important.) The decorations could include red or silver candles on gold tone (bronze or brass) holders. The table could be dressed with a golden cloth and a silver table scarf (or reverse with the red/gold scheme). Go to a store such as Big Lots or McFrugles and get some artificial vines or ivy. Lightly spray with gold or silver paint and then twine around the candles or fresh flowers on the table, buffet or end tables. You can do the same with artificial flowers and the candle holders – just don’t use large or plastic flowers. Stick with small and fabric for the elegance. Also, look in the bridal or wedding section for silver, gold or white decorations. Don’t forget to have a little something to dress up the powder room vanity – a candle or special hand towels and soaps.
Food: Hors d’oeuvres or appetizers -Try to recall foods she has enjoyed or commented on in the past, whether at a party or in a restaurant and either try to make them or buy them from the deli or restaurant. Stick with a theme such as sushi, Italian, Chinese, or all American. Just don’t have anything messy such as hot wings. Some of the big lot stores (Sam’s and Costco) carry ready made hors d’oeuvres but that really require finessing before serving. They aren’t that good just from the oven to the table. Whatever you do, garnish will dress up the dish. Serve on coordinated plates or trays.
Drinks: This depends on your budget. Would she like an open bar, one special drink by the pitcher (Manhattans, Martinis, etc.) or go for champagne. Everyone likes champagne and it simplifies the service and lends elegance. For non-drinkers, buy a sparkling non-alcoholic beverage.
Have fun!
